Glam metal or pop metal according to Wikipaedia is a subgenre of hard rock and heavy metal. It combines elements of these genres with punk rock and pop music, adding catchy hooks and guitar riffs, while borrowing from the aesthetic of 1970s glam rock.
It arose in the United States, particularly on the Los Angeles Sunset Strip. Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Guns and roses where bands that myself and a minority of my classmates followed against the rise of Dance and Rave subcultures. To this day I haven’t missed a concert Bon jovi have played in Ireland in over a decade. Guitar Solos and Power Ballads are a signature of the genre, with long hair, Denim Jeans and Leather Jeans being a signature fashion Identifying members of the genre. To hard rock/Heavy metal fans this pop metal genre was a blight on real metal.
The genre lost mainstream interest from 1991 to 1994 with the rise of grunge and the release of albums such as Nirvana’s Nevermind which I also became a fan of.
